As availability of O2's Xphone draws closer, more details and technical specifications for the Windows Mobile 2003 powered smartphone are revealed.
Slated for availability in the Asia Pacific this month, O2's Xphone will be one of the very first device to feature the latest incarnation of Microsoft's platform for smartphones: Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone. Where the mobile network operator previously only would reveal this, along with some other key clues as to its functionality, further details and technical specifications have now been revealed.
To be powered by a TI OMAP 710 processor, the O2 Xphone - based on the HTC Voyager reference design, upon which the upcoming Orange SPV E200 is based - will offer tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity and GPRS Class 8. In addition, it harbours 32 MB of RAM and a whopping 64 MB of Flash ROM; whether this is to accomodate the expectedly larger operating system or to provide users with non-volatile memory is for the time being unknown.
A 16-bit colour display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels makes up the centerpiece of the handset, and also doubles as a viewfinder for the integrated VGA (0,3 megapixel) camera - complete with a vanity mirror situated below the camera lens at the back of the phone.
On the connectivity side of things, the Xphone sports built-in Bluetooth 1.1 support which offers up profiles enabling serial and headset connectivity, as well as dial-up networking. Additionally, the Xphone also offers an IrDA compatible infrared port, and will come with a USB cradle for local synchronisation purposes.
Following in the footsteps of the recently launched Samsung SPH-i600, the O2 Xphone will also feature an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card expansion slot, theoretically enabling use of Wi-Fi expansion cards, GPS receivers and more.
According to O2, the Xphone will offer up a standby time of up to 90 hours, and a talk time of up to 180 minutes.
The Xphone is listed for availability in November 2003 across Asia and Australia.
Europa erst in 2004.
