Sept. 24 (Telegraph) -- Embattled mobile phone maker Nokia
could produce a handset for Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7
operating system, sources say
Mobile phone maker Nokia could adopt Windows Phone 7 as a
new platform, in addition to its current use of Symbian,
according to website VentureBeat.com. The site reports that a
“trusted source” says that the manufacturer, which has just
appointed former Microsoft employee Stephen Elop as its CEO,
could look at using a new platform to augment its current
strategy.
The same website also reports that Mr Elop has been given
“the green light” to change the company’s strategy on operating
systems and alliances as part of a new focus on the American
market. This leaves the door open to a move, potentially, to
Google’s Android operating system, although that is not thought
to be imminent.
Mr Elop’s appointment represents a break with Nokia’s
Finnish heritage; internal candidate Anssi Vanjoki recently
admitted to the Wall Street Journal that he was quitting the
company because he missed out on being made CEO, while suggesting
that switching to Android would provide the manufacturer with
only short-term relief from its long-term problems.
Nokia’s current flagship, the new N8 smartphone, has
recently been delayed because of software problems, but the
company is still planning to launch a new range of devices based
on the forthcoming MeeGo platform by the end of the year.
