Sony Ericsson dumps Symbian, announces plans to release Microsoft powered cell phones soon, Symbian UIQ ported to Windows CE 5.00
April 01, 2004
... visibly angry at latest changes at Symbian, in cooperation with Japanese partners from Sony, decided that time is ripe to expand line of Sony Ericsson smart phones (PDA phones) to other operating systems and to offer, particularly for corporate uses, cell phones based on Windows CE. Read on...
"We cannot tolerate situation in which Symbian becomes property of our main competitor. It makes no business sense for us to further invest in Symbian in this situation." said Carl-Henric Svanberg hinting that SonyEricsson will be gradually moving away from Symbian. At the same time Sony Ericsson takes over Symbian´s fully owned, located in Sweden, subsidiary - the Ronneby lab - the place where UIQ user interface for Symbian was developed. This lab was previously owned by Ericsson so it is just returning to former owner. Interestingly UIQ is being ported to Windows CE 5.00 so Sony Ericsson will release Windows CE based version of Sony Ericsson P900 phone based on the similar user interface as the old one: "By porting UIQ to Windows CE 5 we ensure, that transition of users from Symbian will be flawless and our know-how can be reused and expanded with .NET technology, that is not available for Symbian." said Carl-Henric Svanberg.
Commentary: we regret that Sony Ericsson decided to use Windows CE only, without Pocket PC Phone Edition or MS Smartphone layers of applications, but it is a good move in right direction and with native availability of .NET in Sony Ericsson phones, we can expect release of applications, written in .NET technologies, that will be running accross all 3 major Microsoft platforms for cell phones: windows CE, Pocket PC (Windows Mobile = also based on Windows CE) and MS Smartphone (Windows Mobile = also based on Windows CE).
